ABOUT US

What is ‘R’ Voices?

‘R’ Voices is an inclusive, adult contemporary choir. We make group singing accessible to all – no auditions, no musical experience required. We run choirs in various locations across the week.

We believe that everyone should have the opportunity to experience group singing. We do our best to create an inclusive, welcoming environment at our rehearsals where everyone feels equal and comfortable. It doesn’t matter if you haven’t sung out loud since school or if you’re a professional singer – we all learn the same way at ‘R’ Voices.

What do ‘R’ Voices sing?

‘R’ Voices’ repertoire is decided by the musical director, Richard Forbes. The songs we sing are a mixture of contemporary music from the last seven decades picked for their mass appeal.

Here’s a very small snapshot of our extensive repertoire:

  • BACK TO BLACK – AMY WINEHOUSE
  • RUNNING UP THAT HILL – KATE BUSH
  • NOTHING COMPARES TO YOU – SINEAD O’CONNOR
  • ROLLING IN THE DEEP – ADELE
  • LIFE ON MARS – DAVID BOWIE
  • EVERY TIME WE SAY GOODBYE – ELLA FITZGERALD
  • HOTEL CALIFORNIA – EAGLES
  • NO SURPRISES – RADIOHEAD
  • AIN’T NOBODY – CHAKA KHAN
  • SEVEN NATION ARMY – WHITE STRIPES
  • PINK PONY CLUB – CHAPPELL ROAN
  • LIVE FOREVER – OASIS
  • TINY DANCER – ELTON JOHN
  • GET LUCKY – DAFT PUNK
  • 90’s DANCE MEDLEY
  • CAN’T HELP FALLING IN LOVE – ELVIS

Who can join ‘R’ Voices?

‘R’ Voices is an adult choir – anyone over the age of 18 is welcome to join.

When and where do you meet?

The choir sessions are run in the evenings between 7.30–9.30 pm. Each choir runs one session per week between Monday – Thursday.

Term dates and holidays are published at the start of the choir year (1 September).

Do I need to audition?

No! We welcome all abilities. There are no auditions.

Do I need previous musical experience?

No! We want everyone to have the opportunity to experience group singing regardless of previous experience. We learn songs using lyric sheets and by listening to recordings of the different choir parts.

Is sheet music available?

We don’t produce sheet music for our arrangements.

How do I access the lyric sheets and MP3 files?

When you join ‘R’ Voices’, you’ll be given access to the song folders stored on Dropbox. Each song folder contains the lyric sheet and MP3 recordings for each part of the song arrangements.

Having access to MP3 recordings for your section allows you to practice at home or on the move. It also helps make the rehearsals more fun and less daunting, as you get an opportunity to listen to the arrangement in advance.

What’s Dropbox?

Dropbox is a file-sharing app – think of it as a big online filing cabinet. Dropbox is simple to use, and we can provide guidance if needed. Over the years, Dropbox has proved to be the most effective way for members to learn their parts outside of weekly choir sessions.

When you join ‘R’ Voices, your welcome email provides clear instructions on how to download and use the app.

REHEARSALS

What should I expect at my first ‘R’ Voices rehearsal?

Click here to find out what to expect at an ‘R’ Voices rehearsal.

  • Welcome and Sign-In: On arrival, your choir leader will greet you, sign you in, and give a short introduction to how the choir works. They’ll explain the different harmonic sections – Soprano, Alto, Tenor, and Bass – and help you begin to consider which part you might feel most comfortable singing.
  • Finding Your Voice: Don’t worry if you’re unsure where you fit! You’ll be encouraged to make your own decision once the singing starts, based on where your natural vocal range feels most comfortable.
  • Support from Other Members: The choir leader will introduce you to another friendly member who will help guide you through the session and answer any questions.
  • Warm-Up Routine: Each session starts with a gentle physical stretch, focusing on the neck and upper-back muscles to prepare the body for singing. Participation is encouraged but entirely up to you – feel free to judge based on your own physical ability.
  • Breathing and Vocal Exercises: We’ll follow with breathing exercises and vocal warm-ups, including scales, arpeggios, and vowel work. This warm-up lasts about 10 minutes and helps get everyone ready to sing.
  • Rehearsal Time: We’ll then begin working on one of the songs from the term’s repertoire folder. There is usually a weekly guideline for what we’re focusing on. While things are generally routine, we do occasionally mix things up with surprise revisits to older songs.
  • You’re Not Alone: Everything will be new at first, but don’t worry – you’ll be surrounded by supportive members who can help you find your feet.
  • Before You Leave: At the end of the session, please say goodbye to the choir leader and remind them you attended. You’ll then receive all the information you need should you wish to become a regular member.

How often do we learn new songs?

Every 10–12 weeks, there will be a shift in the focus of learning, usually aligned with the repertoire planned for upcoming performances. You’ll be notified by email, which will include a link to the relevant Dropbox folder containing all the song materials – including MP3s and lyric sheets.

The choir is always learning new songs, while also revisiting older ones. Songs learned for previous shows don’t disappear – they remain part of our repertoire archive and are regularly brought back depending on the theme of each performance.

You’ll never be expected to learn an entirely new set of songs for a show. We always include existing material – not just because it saves time and eases the pressure during show preparation, but also because we love it, it fits, and it continues to resonate with us.

Revisiting songs from the archive isn’t just practical – it’s nostalgic, energising, and helps newer members feel connected to the choir’s history. These pieces are often used spontaneously in rehearsals – sometimes as warm-ups, sometimes to lift the mood, and often just for the joy of singing them together.

Do you allow children at rehearsals?

We love children, but sadly under 18s are not able to attend our rehearsals. We hope you understand and support our decision on this, to help contribute to a positive, fun, focused learning environment for our choir members.

Can I bring my pet to rehearsals?

With the exception of guide dogs, we are sadly unable to have animals (including therapy pets) at our rehearsal or performance venues.

PERFORMANCES

Why does ‘R’ Voices perform?

Creating performance opportunities provides focus and gives the choir something to work towards. The applied pressure from your leader, your peers and yourself adds to the commitment of the choir, resulting in a strong community of shared experience and human connection. Not forgetting the reward of affirmation, accomplishment, admiration and the pride in yourself and from your family and friends! However, performing is not for everyone and it’s entirely optional – you can be a member of the choir without taking part in performances.

How often does ‘R’ Voices perform?

We aim to perform a few times a year. This includes a variety of shows, some big and some small. They will include community events supporting local charities and foodbanks, pub gigs, theatres and occasionally external opportunities such as festivals in the summer season. Each choir will have at least one big show a year (the “Main Show”).

When will I know about upcoming show dates?

As soon as we know – you know! Each choir’s Main Show will be booked over six months in advance. We aim to provide around three months’ notice for smaller shows and performances.

Do I have to take part in shows?

As much as we would love you to, of course not! Our choir is not based on performance; it’s based on creating a warm, inclusive community of people that feel comfortable singing together. Take the pressure off yourself, and if you ever feel that you would like to experience that beyond the rehearsal room, take the plunge! You probably won’t look back. Performances are really relaxed and lots of fun.

Can I perform at every show?

Except for some professional bookings, the majority of ‘R’ Voices performances are completely inclusive, and choir members can perform with their “primary” choir after 12 weeks of joining. On occasions where limitations on performer numbers or other restrictions have been imposed by an external booking agent or venue, Richard Forbes reserves the right to make the final decision on show participants.

Performance Criteria

  • Choir members are only permitted to take part in their “primary” choir performances.
  • New members may take part in shows after 12 weeks from joining, giving time to prepare and respecting those who have rehearsed to a performance standard.
  • All members wishing to participate in their choir’s Main Show must purchase two full-price tickets at the start of the rehearsal period.
  • We ask for a “show fee” once a year when costs are higher in the form of those two ticket purchases. This helps cover production costs, ensures a full audience, and makes the experience better for everyone.

Can I claim expenses for shows?

‘R’ Voices does not provide expenses for refreshments or reimburse travel to and from shows.

Content policy

We always aim to make our repertoire choices and show themes as inclusive as possible. Our show themes are designed to be accessible for a family audience. Occasionally, we find that material is outdated or offensive; in such cases, we amend or remove the song from our repertoire.

Can children attend all shows?

Children are welcome at all ‘R’ Voices shows unless a performance venue enforces an age restriction. Your choir leader will announce any restrictions before the rehearsal process for the show begins.

Where do the ticket sales profits go?

We try to keep ticket prices as low and inclusive as possible while covering costs. Whenever possible, we combine productions with fundraising and charity collaborations throughout the year. Our goal is to deliver professional performances at wonderful venues to the highest standard, providing accomplishment and enjoyment for both choir and audience.

Ticket sales help cover costs such as:

  • Venue hire
  • Lighting and sound equipment rental
  • Professional technicians and musicians
  • Additional staging
  • Insurances and licences
  • Backstage and front-of-house staff
  • Choir leaders’ fees
  • Marketing and promotion costs

These costs are always higher for the “Main Shows” that we aim to produce once a year for each choir.

Membership options & fees

The membership subscription makes you a member of ‘R’ Voices choir.
We feel that a monthly membership fee is more manageable than the previous termly format – all memberships are paid monthly via GoCardless.

This ongoing monthly payment spreads the cost over the year and guarantees your place at rehearsals, paying for rehearsal costs and contributing to our productions, events, socials, resources and running costs throughout the year.

  • MEMBERSHIP 1 – M1 – £48 per month: Attend all sessions at your ‘Primary’ choir during the Choir Year. Paid by Direct Debit on the first day of each month.
  • MEMBERSHIP 2 – M2 – £53 per month: Attend all sessions at your ‘Primary’ choir + 15 sessions at a ‘Secondary’ location. Paid by Direct Debit on the first day of each month.
  • Unused secondary sessions do not roll over and are not transferable.
  • All memberships require a one-off, one-month deposit (non-refundable, used as notice payment if you leave).
  • If joining mid-month, fees are charged pro-rata.

Do you offer online membership?

At present we do not offer online membership options.

What is GoCardless?

GoCardless is a payment service provider that enables recurring and one-off payments directly from customers’ bank accounts via Direct Debit.
‘R’ Voices does not store customers’ bank details.

What if my preferred choir location is full?

If your preferred location is at full capacity, you can join the waiting list or choose another location.

Payment terms

  • First month = monthly payment + one-month deposit (non-refundable, held as notice payment).
  • Your first payment includes:
    • 1 × full month deposit (M1 £48 / M2 £53)
    • Pro-rata amount for the remainder of the joining month
  • Subsequent payments: 1 × full month fee (M1 £48 / M2 £53).

Why do I have to pay a deposit?

The deposit equals one month’s fees – your final month is pre-paid.
If you decide to leave, provide at least one month’s notice; your deposit covers that notice period.

Cancellations & refunds

  • If you can’t attend every rehearsal: No problem! Come when you can. Consider the M2 option for extra sessions. Use online resources to keep up if needed.
  • No refunds for missed sessions: Fees support professional leaders, venues, resources and admin costs regardless of attendance.
  • If a session is cancelled by ‘R’ Voices: We’ll try to reschedule. If not possible, a credit is applied to the next invoice.
  • To cancel membership: Complete the Cancel Membership Form using the same contact details you registered with. Provide four weeks’ notice.

Why do I pay for weeks when there is no choir?

Fees are calculated by spreading annual costs (46 / 61 sessions per year) over twelve months.
M1 ≈ £12 per session; M2 ≈ £10 per session.

Do you offer concession rates?

Concession rates support those facing financial barriers. We offer a 15% discount for:

  • Students
  • Individuals on a low income
  • NHS staff and key workers where affordability is a barrier

Proof of eligibility is required via the Concession Form. ‘R’ Voices reserves the right to change or withdraw discounts at any time.

Term dates 2025–26

W/C 8 Sept 2025 – W/C 24 Aug 2026 (inclusive).
Holiday weeks: w/c 22 Dec, 29 Dec, 30 Mar, 17 Aug, 24 Aug.

What does my membership fee cover?

  • 46 / 61 sessions per year (M1 / M2)
  • A guaranteed place at your primary choir
  • Access to all learning resources and materials
  • Professional choir leaders and support costs including:
    • Performance licences & copyright fees
    • Production of backing tracks and resources
    • Website and social media maintenance
    • Venue hire, equipment & insurance
    • Admin fees and business taxes

Additional costs or fees

We ask for a ‘show fee’ once a year for the Main Show when costs are higher (through purchase of two tickets). This supports production costs, guarantees an audience and reduces ticket-sale pressure for everyone.
